A Catholic Culture reader's recommendation: “An amazing story of how love and a holy, hopeful marriage is life giving and faith affirming; and how marital infidelity causes hate, despair and destruction.”

This is a print of the original image of Divine Mercy painted according to Jesus's request to St. Faustina. The Lord explained: "The two rays denote Blood and Water. The pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls. ... Happy is the one who will dwell in their shelter, for the just hand of God shall not lay hold of him. By means of this image I shall grant many graces to souls." On the frame is a brass plaque with the incscription, "JESUS, I TRUST IN YOU". This print bears the Official Seal from the Archdiocese of Vilnius.

This is arguably the most highly-recommended work of spiritual direction for the laity. St. Francis de Sales (1567 - 1622), as Bishop of Geneva during the Catholic Counter-Reformation, is said to have converted over 70,000 Calvinists. As a champion of the universal call to holiness, he spent much of his time giving spiritual direction to the laity. He wrote Introduction to the Devout Life to make his simple, cheerful, and sensible approach to holiness available to all. Together with St. Jane Frances de Chantal, St. Francis founded the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary for women. He also established an Oratory of St. Philip Neri for men. Long after his death, various congregations have continued to adopt his spiritual principles. He was named a doctor of the Church in 1877.

VeggieTales have been around for a long time now (remember VHS cassettes?), teaching kids Biblical values through entertaining characters who are, well, vegetables. (Some parents think this is a bad image for kids to have of key figures in salvation history, so give it some thought.) While this DVD is not really ALL the shows, it is a good way to get started, including ten shows from the early period, 1993-1999, which some parents think are the best: Where's God When I'm S-scared??; God Wants Me to Forgive Them?!?; Are You My Neighbor?; Rack, Shack, & Benny; Dave & The Giant Pickle; The Toy That Saved Christmas; LarryBoy and the Fib from Outer Space; Josh & The Big Wall; Madame Blueberry; and LarryBoy and the Rumor Weed. Includes silly songs, too. 2015. Not rated. DVD 322 min.

Celebrate the Faith with your kids all year round! For over half a century, Catholic families have treasured the practical piety and homespun wisdom of Mary Reed Newland's classic of domestic spirituality. You will find all the prayers, crafts, family activities, litanies, and recipes that will help make your children ever-mindful of the beautiful rhythm of the Church calendar. Newland shows how to celebrate all of our Catholic feasts, and explains why tradition accords special meaning to certain foods, colors, and symbols, and how these add to the incarnational character of Catholic spirituality allowing children to experience the Faith through sight, smell, touch, and taste.

Shorter Christian Prayer is ideal for use by the laity, as compared with the far more complex four-volume Liturgy of the Hours (or Divine Office) used by the clergy. There are a number of editions available, with differences in translation depending on when they were published, and with differences in the quality of the proofreading. This edition includes the Four Week Psalter and a good selection of material for Morning and Evening Prayer (Matins and Vespers), which will typically form the core of Liturgical Prayer for lay persons. Large print editions are also available.

Investigating jar openers for home use, Jeff Mirus tried the incomparably simple EZ Off—a great choice if you can mount it under an upper kitchen cabinet. It opens jars of widely varying sizes. Just lift the jar into the mouth of the V, slide it back against the teeth, and turn the jar clockwise while the jaws keep the top from slipping. Very little strength is needed. There are, of course, all kinds of jar openers on the market: hand-held, stationary, and electric, ranging from about $6 to well over $100. Your needs may vary, but if you can mount this, look no further.
