Advent at Ephesus (Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles)

This unique CD is recorded by the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles: a young, monastic order of Sisters located in rural Missouri, dedicated to prayer for priests. These nuns sing the office eight times a day for a total of about three hours, led by a Mother Superior who is a trained singer, so while they are not a professional ensemble, they sound as good as one. Advent at Ephesus includes an amazing variety of traditional Latin and English hymns, polyphony, Gregorian Chant, medieval harmonies and an original piece to prayerfully lead you through the sacred season in preparation for Christmas.

Bambinelli Sunday: A Christmas Blessing (Amy Welborn, Ann Kissane Engelhart)

The blessing of the Bambinelli (baby Jesus figures), an Italian Christmas tradition going back decades, was made more well-known by Pope Benedict XVI. This inspired Catholic author Amy Welborn to write the story of Alessandro, a young boy whose grandfather encourages to make his own baby Jesus figurine and takes him to have it blessed by the Pope. Ann Kissane Engelhart's illustrations convey the beauty of Naples and Rome. For children aged 7-10.

Joy to the World: Christmas Stories and Songs (Tomie dePaola)

This book brings together three previously published Christmas stories by legendary children's author Tomie dePaola, interspersed with illustrated Christmas carols (including words and music). Two of the stories, "The Night of Las Posadas" (about when Mary and Joseph were seeking for an inn in Bethlehem) and "The Legend of the Poinsettia" (about a little girl's gift to the Christ-child), are based on Mexican Christmas traditions. The third is "The Story of the Three Wise Kings". All are beautifully illustrated in Tomie's warm, childlike but reverent style.

In Sinu Jesu: When Heart Speaks to Heart—The Journal of a Priest at Prayer

In 2007, Our Lord and Our Lady began to speak to the heart of a Benedictine monk in the silence of adoration. He was told to write down what he received, and now this work has been published anonymously with an imprimatur. It covers the entire spiritual life, but above all it urges priests to spend more time adoring Jesus in the Eucharist, for only then will the Church be healed and renewed. Fr. Timothy Combs, O.P., recommends: “This is a MAGNIFICENTLY RICH journal to nourish & rejuvenate priestly, Eucharistic spirituality. I can think of no better gift for a priest this Christmas.”

The Island (English subtitled)

Somewhere in Northern Russia in a small Russian Orthodox monastery lives a very unusual man. His fellow monks are confused by his bizarre conduct. Those who visit the island believe that the man has the power to heal, exorcise demons and foretell the future. However, he considers himself unworthy because of a sin he committed in his youth. The film is a parable, combining the realities of Russian everyday life with monastic ritual and routine. This beautiful film was a selection in prestigious film festivals the world over.

God Alone: The Collected Writings of St. Louis Marie De Montfort

The collected works of the greatest exponent of Marian devotion. St. Louis proposes Marian devotion not as an isolated part of the Christian life but in fact as the most perfect way of living one's baptismal vows. This spirituality has been practiced and wholeheartedly endorsed by several popes starting with Pope Pius IX, who said that St. Louis's spirituality was the best and most acceptable form of devotion to Mary. Recommended by Pope Leo XIII, Pope St. Pius X, Pope Benedict XV, Popes Pius XI and XII, and most recently, Pope St. John Paul II, who said that "The reading of True Devotion to Mary was a decisive turning-point in my life," and took his motto "Totus Tuus" ("I am all thine") from De Montfort.

Kind of Blue (Miles Davis)

The most famous jazz album ever made, and rightly so. The Catholic life involves finding freedom within structure. So does jazz. Melodic and contemplative, this album, released in 1959, is and will be regarded in centuries to come as one of the single greatest products of American culture. And pianist Bill Evans's liner notes provide perhaps the most profound concise summary of the spirit of jazz improvisation yet written. Audio CD and MP3.
