Original Image of Divine Mercy - Framed 8 x 12 Print

This is a print of the original image of Divine Mercy painted according to Jesus's request to St. Faustina. The Lord explained: "The two rays denote Blood and Water. The pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls. ... Happy is the one who will dwell in their shelter, for the just hand of God shall not lay hold of him. By means of this image I shall grant many graces to souls." On the frame is a brass plaque with the incscription, "JESUS, I TRUST IN YOU". This print bears the Official Seal from the Archdiocese of Vilnius.

A Still, Small Voice: A Practical Guide on Reported Revelations (Fr. Benedict Groeschel)

The late Fr. Benedict Groeschel was noted around the world for his deep spirituality, psychological expertise, and practical wisdom. In 1993, he wrote this brief but comprehensive practical guide for all those interested in private revelations, reports of visions and other extraordinary religious phenomena. Drawing on spiritual classics and Church documents not readily available, he gives practical norms on how to evaluate these claims. He also offers an alternative to unusual and extraordinary ways of knowing the things of God, which is a normal everyday opportunity open to all called “religious experience”—the action of grace in our lives that can become a powerful source of virtue and holiness.

The Nightingale (Mark Christopher Brandt)

A 49-minute-long programmatic suite inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen story by the same name, and a truly beautiful and impressive work of art. The album seamlessly blends ambitious, through-composed thematic development with moments of improvisation. The music is performed with great dynamism and chemistry by flutist Yana Nikol, cellist Katherine Colburn, and the Catholic composer himself on piano. See our interview with Brandt on The Nightingale.

Missa Ave Maris Stella, Marian Motets (Josquin Desprez)

These gorgeous Marian pieces are among the greatest works of the Renaissance composer Josquin, a contemporary of Palestrina. They are extraordinarily rhythmically complex yet natural and moving. Recorded by the Weser-Renaissance ensemble under Manfred Cordes.

Canon PowerShot ELPH 360 HS Camera

With only anemic digital cameras under $100 and many $200 cameras struggling to be better than your phone, what do you do if you want a camera that feels like a camera and takes better pictures but you don’t have a big budget? In a rapidly-changing field, one good bet as of mid-2017 is the Canon PowerShot ELPH 360 HS. It manages to pack a 12x optical zoom with optical image stabilization into a comfortable form factor. It also has a decent flash. And its superb “intelligent” mode produces extraordinarily good results. Available in gray, black and (yes!) purple.

Archbishop Chaput calls this "the best portrayal of a good priest in impossible circumstances I've seen in several decades." Martin McDonagh's serious yet savagely funny film (reviewed here) stars Brendan Gleeson as a priest in a little Irish village whose inhabitants, like so many in Ireland, are disillusioned with the faith. A man enters the confessional and informs Fr. James that because he was molested by a priest as a child, he will murder Fr. James in one week's time. During that time, Fr. James must decide how to respond to this threat while continuing to try to break through the indifference and contempt of his flock. 2014. Rated R. DVD, Blu-Ray, streaming. 101 min.

VeggieTales: All the Shows Vol. 1

VeggieTales have been around for a long time now (remember VHS cassettes?), teaching kids Biblical values through entertaining characters who are, well, vegetables. (Some parents think this is a bad image for kids to have of key figures in salvation history, so give it some thought.) While this DVD is not really ALL the shows, it is a good way to get started, including ten shows from the early period, 1993-1999, which some parents think are the best: Where's God When I'm S-scared??; God Wants Me to Forgive Them?!?; Are You My Neighbor?; Rack, Shack, & Benny; Dave & The Giant Pickle; The Toy That Saved Christmas; LarryBoy and the Fib from Outer Space; Josh & The Big Wall; Madame Blueberry; and LarryBoy and the Rumor Weed. Includes silly songs, too. 2015. Not rated. DVD 322 min.

Inferno (Modern Library Classics, translated by Anthony Esolen)

Dante's Divine Comedy is perhaps the Catholic work of art par excellence. As one of the greatest poems ever written it has moved countless readers and influenced artists of all kinds, while its rich theology has inspired more than one papal encyclical. This is Anthony Esolen's translation of the first part, Inferno, with the classic Gustave Dore illustrations. Make sure to get Paradiso and Purgatorio too, of course.

Shorter Christian Prayer - Large Type Edition, 2004

Shorter Christian Prayer is ideal for use by the laity, as compared with the far more complex four-volume Liturgy of the Hours (or Divine Office) used by the clergy. There are a number of editions available, with differences in translation depending on when they were published, and with differences in the quality of the proofreading. This edition includes the Four Week Psalter and a good selection of material for Morning and Evening Prayer (Matins and Vespers), which will typically form the core of Liturgical Prayer for lay persons. Large print editions are also available.
