Canada: transgendered teacher refuses Catholic school’s settlement offer
CWN - April 13, 2011
A transgendered substitute teacher fired by an Alberta Catholic school system in 2008 has rejected the system’s latest settlement offer.
Following her firing, Jan Buterman filed a complaint with the Alberta Human Rights Commission with the backing of the Alberta Teachers’ Association. She rejected the school’s offer to work in “an environment not connected to the witness and modeling requirements of our faith,” and has now rejected a $78,000 settlement offer (worth $81,280 in US dollars).
