Former Boston Globe editor discusses early abuse investigation

The former editor of the Boston Globe told journalism students about the beginnings of an investigative report into sexual abuse in the Boston archdiocese. The work of the Globe's "Spotlight Team" eventually unearthed clear evidence that the archdiocese had covered up evidence of clerical abuse, eventually prompting the resignation of Cardinal Bernard Law and precipitating a nationwide investigation that discovered similar misbehavior in dozens of other dioceses.

    Alas, what he says is true: “It was a cover-up that lasted for decades, and that would have lasted for decades more,” had the paper not done that reporting. Knowing that the Globe changed so much is “gratifying,” he said.
