US bishops opposing human-body disposal process

Bishop William Lori, chairman of the US bishops’ Committee on Doctrine, has warned that a process for the disposing of human remains, originally developed for the disposal of animal carcasses, is incompatible with Catholic teaching on the dignity of the body. ‘Dissolving bodies in a vat of chemicals and pouring the resultant liquid down the drain is not a respectful way to dispose of human remains,’ he wrote. The New York State Catholic Conference has opposed a bill that would permit the practice in the state.
