Half-million Vietnamese Catholics join in ceremony at Marian shrine
CWN - January 10, 2011
An estimated 500,000 people attended the closing ceremonies of Jubilee Year for the Vietnamese Catholic Church, braving heavy rain and official discouragement by the government to participate in the celebration at a beloved Marian shrine.
Cardinal Ivan Dias, the prefect of the Congregation for Evangelization, acted as the Pope’s personal representatives to the closing ceremonies, which were held at the sanctuary of Our Lady of La Vang. More than 40 bishops and 1,200 priests participated in the closing ceremonies.
