Cuban cardinal welcomes Castro’s proposals for freer economy

Cardinal Jaime Ortega has welcomed President Raul Castro’s proposals for a freer economy. During a January 1 Mass, the cardinal prayed publicly “for the successful implementation of this process of renewal for the good of all the people.”
Castro has proposed reductions in state subsidies and government jobs while calling for greater foreign investment and non-government employment.
