Church leaders in Pakistan are calling for the postponement of demonstrations against the country’s blasphemy laws, scheduled for December 24 and 31, for fear of a violent backlash by Islamic militants.
Catholic and Protestant leaders joined in suggesting that the demonstrations, if they took place on those dates, could cause attacks on Christian houses of worship on Christmas and New Year’s days.
The Church leaders emphasized that they were not opposed to public efforts to repeal the blasphemy laws, but suggested that demonstrations might be moved to different dates.
