Canadian Orthodox archbishop suspended; panel will investigate abuse charge

December 02, 2010

The Synod of Bishops of the Orthodox Church in America has suspended Archbishop Seraphim (Storheim) of Ottawa, and set up a commission to investigate charges of sexual abuse that have been lodged against the prelate.

Archbishop Seraphim has been on a leave of absence since September, when the abuse charges were made public. The Synod announced that “after careful deliberations and in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Orthodox Church in America mandated in cases of allegations of sexual misconduct,” the archbishop should be suspended from active ministry. Bishop Irenée (Rochon) of Quebec was appointed the apostolic administrator of the Ottawa archdiocese, to replace Archbishop Seraphim until the investigation is concluded.
