Belgian archbishop cautions against 'vengeance' in pursuit of abusive priests

October 28, 2010

Archbishop Andre-Joseph Leonard of Brussels has asked for a balanced approach to the punishment of priests who have been guilty of abuse, warning against “a sort of vengeance.”

Questioned as to whether abusive priests should be punished, the archbishop replied: “If they’re still active, certainly.” But he questioned whether any good purpose is served by pursuing elderly retired priests. “I’m not sure that exercising a sort of vengeance that will have no concrete result is humane,” he said.
