Cardinal Antonio Jose Gonzalez Zumarraga, the retired Archbishop of Quito, Ecuador, died on October 13 at the age of 83.
Born in Ecuador and ordained to the priesthood in 1951, the future cardinal was named an auxiliary bishop for Quito in 1969. In 1978 he became Bishop of Machala, but in 1980 he returned to Quito as coadjutor archbishop, becoming the Archbishop in 1985, remaining in that post until his retirement in 2003 at the age of 78. He was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope John Paul II in 2001. With the death of Cardinal Gonzalez Zumarraga, there are now 192 living members of the College of Cardinals, of whom 116 are under the age of 80 and thus eligible to take part in a papal election.
