An Irish bishop has asked the priests of his diocese to donate €1,000 ($1,300) apiece to help defray the costs of sex-abuse settlement payments.
Bishop Denis Brennan of Ferns—who had asked for contributions from the lay faithful of the diocese earlier this year—wrote to his priests saying that a €1,000 donation from each would “meet our present needs.” The diocese faces move than 100 charges of abuse against 21 priests.
