Hackers steal $600,000 from diocese’s bank account
CWN - September 03, 2010
Hackers, likely from overseas, have stolen over $600,000 from an Iowa diocese and transferred the funds to other accounts.
“While the Diocese of Des Moines is protected by insurance and anticipates the restoration of the funds, we have been advised that such criminal activity is rampant,” said Bishop Richard Pates of Des Moines. $180,000 has been recovered to date.
According to the FBI, 205 businesses have been victims of such criminal activity since 2004, with estimated combined losses of over $40 million.
