El Salvador prelate laments massacre of migrants
September 01, 2010
At an August 29 press conference, El Salvador’s leading prelate lamented the recent massacre of 72 migrants in Mexico. The migrants, who came from Central and South America, were likely traveling to the United States.
“It must be said that our brothers are permanently victims of abuse, injustice, violence, and it cannot go on like this,” said Archbishop José Luis Escobar Alas of San Salvador. “The government of Mexico should also ensure the safety of these people. Failure to carry documents does not mean that they can be abused, insulted, humiliated, deprived of their property, and even killed.”
The prelate exhorted El Salvador’s government to work to provide jobs to ensure that “no young person would have to emigrate from their country.”
