Legal group offers free defense for hospitals battling abortion mandates

August 20, 2010

The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty has threatened to bring suit against the US federal government on behalf of any Church-run hospital that faces pressure to perform abortions.

“We will represent, pro bono, any religious hospital or its personnel that HHS threatens because of their conscientious objection to abortion," promised Kevin Hasson, the president of the Becket Fund. "And we will, if necessary, sue to block any such proposed policy."?

Hasson was reacting to a drive by the American Civil Liberties Union to require hospitals to perform abortions, overriding the conscientious objections of doctors, nurses, and other health-care personnel. Such an approach, Hasson said, would be a clear violation of religious freedom.
