Portuguese parliament rejects same-sex marriage

Lawmakers in Lisbon easily defeated a proposal to provide legal recognition for same-sex marriages in an October 10 vote. The proposal was opposed by both the Socialist government and the main opposition party-- and, according to a fresh opinion poll, by a solid majority of Portuguese citizens. But a challenge to Portugal's marriage law, brought by a lesbian couple, is pending before the European courts.
