In southern Sudan, a bishop on the front lines

The National Catholic Register profiles Bishop Macram Max Gassis of El Obeid, Sudan, who presides over a poor and troubled diocese “on the front line of radical Islam.” Bishop Gassis expresses his concern about the future of southern Sudan, where a referendum in 2011 could lead to independence—or could precipitate a renewal of Africa’s longest and bloodiest civil war.
