Catholic University of America president named bishop
CWN - June 04, 2010
The Holy See Press Office announed on June 4 that Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Father David O’Connell as coadjutor bishop of Trenton (New Jersey). The Vincentian priest, who has served as president of Catholic University of America since 1998, will succeed Bishop John Smith, who turns 75 on June 23.
Father O’Connell had announced last October that he would resign his university presidency in 2010. The Cardinal Newman Society has praised Father O’Connell for his fidelity to Ex Corde Ecclesiae and for the steps he has taken to enhance the university’s Catholic identity.
