European bishops' group welcomes plan for extended maternity-leave
October 03, 2008
The Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community (COMECE) has welcomes a proposal to extend maternity-leave benefits to a minimum of 18 weeks for women working in European Union countries. COMECE said that the plan "would allow women to achieve a better balance between work and family life, whilst guaranteeing greater fairness in wages between men and women. It would also contribute to slowing down the birth decrease in Europe."
