Italian bishops may have covered up abuse, concedes president of episcopal conference
CWN - May 28, 2010
Cases of sexual abuse by Catholic priests in Italy may have been covered up by bishops there, as they were in other countries, the president of the Italian bishops' conference has conceded. Asked by journalists whether any of the 100 abuse cases handled by canonical courts in the last decade involved episopal cover-ups, Cardinal Angelo Bagnaso replied: "There is a possibility." The cardinal said that old attitudes in the hierarchy, which prompted some bishops to conceal evidence of priestly misconduct, "must be corrected and overcome."
