Protests by faithful mar installation of coadjutor in Hanoi

Dozens of Catholic activists stood outside Hanoi's cathedral of St. Joseph on May 6, expressing their concern at the installation of Bishop Peter Nguyen Van Nhon as coadjutor to Archbishop Joseph Ngo Quang Kiet. Many Catholics fear that the coadjutor was appointed as part of a Vatican ceremony to ease out Archbishop Kiet, who has clashed with the government.

Government officials, on the other hand, gave their full support to the coadjutor. State-controlled media emphasized that the appointment was made by Pope Benedict XVI with the approval of the Vietnamese government-- thus reinforcing the Catholic activists' fears.
