Pope meets Georgia's president, pushes for negotiated solution

Pope Benedict XVI met on May 7 with President Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia. Their conversation focus on Church-state relations in the former Soviet republic-- including particularly the humanitarian work of the Caritas relief agency-- and the need for inter-religious cooperation. The Pope expressed hope that negotiations could resolve the tensions in the region.
