A majority of American Catholics approve of the leadership of Pope Benedict XVI, despite misgivings about the Vatican's handling of the sex-abuse crisis, according to a new Zogby poll.
The Zogby Interactive survey found that 56% of American Catholics have a positive view of this pontificate, with 32% negative. Views about the performance of the American bishops are more evenly split, with approval edging disapproval by 45- 44%.
Most respondents had a negative view of the Vatican's response to the sex-abuse scandal. Again the numbers were somewhat more negative for the American bishops.
