CWN Editor's Note: Cardinal Konrad Krajewski, the papal almoner, escaped injury when gunmen fired at the vehicle he was using to distribute humanitarian aid in Ukraine on September 17.

Cardinal Krajewski, who is now the prefect of the Dicastery for the Service of Charity, was making his fourth visit to Ukraine since the start of the war in February. He reached the embattled town of Zaporizhzhia with a minibus full of provisions. But unidentified assailants opened fire on the vehicle, forcing the cardinal and his companions to run for cover.

“I didn’t know where to run,” the cardinal recalled, explaining that he was unfamiliar with the locale and unsure where the gunmen were hidden. He escaped without further incident, however, and continued his mission.
