Italian bishops issue wake-up call for country's southern region

The Italian Catholic bishops' conference has called for major changes in the country's southern region, to "get past the inadequacies of today's political class." Citing widespread corruption, persistent high unemployment, and a lack of effective leadership, the bishops said: "The region will never realize its full potential until the men and women of the south understand that they cannot expect from others that which depends on them."
