Nuncio in Haiti: ‘The seminaries and the seminarians lost everything’
CWN - February 25, 2010
The apostolic nuncio in Haiti has issued a report on the state of the nation’s seminaries following last month’s earthquakes. Although both seminaries were destroyed, with only a few books remaining, 241 out of 256 seminarians survived after many were rescued from the rubble. Living in tents, the 28 students in their final year of theology will conclude their year in seminary; the others have been sent home to their dioceses, where their bishops must provide for their formation.
80% of the nation’s 8.8 million people are Catholic.
