Muslims attack Christian churches, homes in Pakistan’s largest city

February 25, 2010

A mob of Muslims in Karachi vandalized two Protestant churches, beat up Christians in the streets, and attacked Christian shops and homes on February 21 following a dispute between a Muslim merchant and a Christian customer.

“Police took control of the situation and now patrol the streets of the neighborhood,” said Father Edward Joseph, rector of the cathedral. “Even the churches are protected by guards.”

97% of the nation’s 159.6 million people are Muslim; 0.7% are Catholic. With 12.3 million people, Karachi is Pakistan’s largest city.
