Turkey's government might welcome Patriarch's appeal to European court
CWN - February 19, 2010
Turkey's government might welcome an appeal to the European courts by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, who wants permission to re-open an Orthodox theological school. While the plans of the Orthodox Patriarch have been blocked by Turkish officials, an AsiaNews analyst writes that government officials are split on the issue. Reform-minded officials might be pleased by a decision from Strasbourg, forcing the government to grant greater religious freedom to the country's Christian minority.
