Adult stem cells may match promise of embryonic cells

September 26, 2008

Researchers at Harvard University have developed a method of taking stem cells from adult tissue and making them ‘regress’ into the same condition as embryonic stem cells, with the potential to develop into any sort of tissue. The development could ease moral concerns about stem-cell research. To date, research using adult stem cells has been more productive. But scientists insist that embryonic stem cells are more promising because of their more flexible use; the latest finding could make adult stem cells equally flexible. Unlike embryonic stem cells-- which are harvested by destroying human embryos-- adult stem cells can be obtained through morally acceptable means.
