Portrait of Cardinal Baum, America's senior presence at the Vatican
CWN - January 29, 2010
John Allen reflects on the long career of Cardinal William Baum-- former Archbishop of Washington, former prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education, former head of the Apostolic Penitentiary. Now in retirement, "Baum is now the second longest serving cardinal in American history, behind only the legendary Cardinal James Gibbons of Baltimore."

I am delighted to read a POSITIVE and really uplifting article in the pages of the NCR. Cardinal Baum ordained me in 1977, and to me he has always been the walking embodiment of a Christian gentleman. It is so good to see him recognized. John Allen is an honest reporter, and I am not surprised to see this fine article signed by him.
