Martyrs bear witness to civilization of love, Pope says

December 28, 2009

On the feast of the first Christian martyr, Pope Benedict XVI reminded the faithful of "the many believers who, in various parts of the world, undergo trials and suffering for the faith." At a midday public audience on December 26, the feast of St. Stephen, the Holy Father said that everyone who suffers for the faith helps to build up "the civilization of love which does not cave in before evil and violence but breaks down barriers between men, making them brothers in the great family of the children of God."
