Pope cautions Brazilian bishops on enduring influence of liberation theology

December 07, 2009

Meeting on December 5 with a group of bishops from Brazil, Pope Benedict XVI concentrated his remarks on the influence of Catholic schools and on the enduring effects of liberation theology.

Catholic schools, the Pope remarked, are “not reserved exclusively to Catholics” but serve the entire society. For that reason, and because parents are always the primary educators, Catholic schools should enjoy “juridical and economic parity with state schools.”

Turning to liberation theology, the Pontiff said that the dangers of the approach were manifest in “rebellion, division, dissent, offense, and anarchy,” and remain detrimental to society and the Church today. He encouraged the visiting Brazilian bishops to re-examine the Vatican’s caution on the doctrine of liberation theology if they feel any attraction toward that school of thought, and recognize the importance of maintaining Church unity and accepting the guidance of the teaching magisterium.
