Ireland’s justice minister blasts papal nuncio for not cooperating with abuse inquiry
December 01, 2009
Wishing to avoid a diplomatic incident, Ireland’s department of foreign affairs rejected calls to expel the papal nuncio because of his and his predecessor’s decision not to respond to inquiries from the commission that investigated abuse in the Archdiocese of Dublin.
Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza, who has served as Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland since 2008, came under fire from Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern. “I would not agree with non-co-operation by anyone,” said Ahern. “This was set up by the State and lack of co-operation by the Church I do not think is something that is or was correct.”
