Cardinal Zen explains papal letter in pamphlet for Chinese Catholics

November 25, 2009

Cardinal Joseph Zen has released a small guide for Chinese Catholics, explaining the essential arguments of the letter written by Pope Benedict XVI to the Church in China in 2007. The guide, published in booklet form, addresses the crucial question of how loyal Catholics should look upon the government-controlled Patriotic Association, which has sought to create distance between Chinese Catholics and the Holy See. Following the arguments of the Pope's letter, Cardinal Zen says that the Patriotic Association is the foremost cause of divisions among the Catholics of China. But he notes that Chinese bishops may be justified in joining the Patriotic Association, if that step will allow them to exercise their ministry freely, as long as they do not accede to any demands incompatible with their faith.
