Burmese refugees picket Catholic Charities in Pittsburgh
November 25, 2009
Aided by the Three Rivers Coalition for Justice, a group with ties to organized labor, more than 30 Karen refugees from Myanmar held a protest outside the Diocese of Pittsburgh’s Catholic Charities office. The protestors alleged that Catholic Charities have provided them with a translator who held them in contempt, that a Catholic Charities employee pocketed $500 in rent money, and that Karen workers receive unsafe jobs and lower pay at a local plant.
Bishop David Zubik went outside to meet with the protestors and has invited a labor union representative to a meeting to help settle the issue.
