Four US bishops opted out of national CCHD collection

November 24, 2009

The annual collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) was taken up in parishes all across the US last Sunday. But four bishops, responding to the intense criticism of the CCHD for funding anti-Catholic causes, either chose not to participate in the nationwide collection or said that they would direct the receipts from their diocese to another charity rather than the national CCHD office. The four declining to participate were Bishops Robert Baker of Birmingham, Alabama; John Barres of Allentown, Pennysvania; Fabian Bruskewitz of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Robert Morlino of Madison, Wisconsin.

There was at least one more. Bishop Joseph Adamec of Altoona-Johnstown diocese will keep all money collected this year for local charities. JohnVIII

Dang! I didn't realize the split was 25/75, the local charities receiving the smaller allocation. I trust the Houston/Galveston Archdiocese to have done their homework and am not too happy to see the greater amount go to God-knows-where (and He does)!

Very wise bishops, these four. Wish there had been more.
