No imminent Vatican statement on Medjugorje, cardinal says November 20, 2009
Cardinal Vinko Puljic of Sarajevo has denied reports that the Vatican has commissioned a new inquiry into the alleged apparitions at Medjugorje. The cardinal also said that he does not expect the Vatican to release a statement about the Medjugorje phenomenon any time in the immediate future.
Cardinal Puljic told reporters in Rome that the bishops of Bosnia-Herzegovina are united in their support of the local prelate, Bishop Pavao Zanic of Mostar, who has placed strict restrictions on Medjugorje and discouraged acceptance of the claims that the Virgin Mary is appearing there. However, the cardinal indicated, the "pastoral significant" of Medjugorje-- the spiritual benefits reported by many who have visited there-- raise different questions.
