November 20, 2009
Pope Benedict XVI met on November 20 with President Runaldo Ronald Venetiaan of Suriname. A short statement released by the Vatican after the meeting indicated that their discussion had centered on the policies of the South American government, particularly for the preservation of the environment.
Suriname, a small nation in northern South America, has a population of about 480,000. The country was a major target for immigrants from India during the 19th century, and today it's population is divided roughly equally among Hindus, Protestants, Catholics, and Muslims.
