Minnesota archdiocese sets standards for speakers at Catholic institutions

November 20, 2009

Archbishop John Nienstedt of St. Paul-Minneapolis, Minnesota, has set out a new policy establishing standards for speakers who appear at Catholic churches and institutions. All Catholic speakers should be in good standing with the Church, the policy dictates. "The speaker’s writings and previous public presentations must also be in harmony with the teaching and discipline of the church."

The archdiocesan policy explicitly prohibits speakers who are living "in irregular marriages or those living a lifestyle at variance with Church teaching." Priests who have left ministry without a dispensation are also barred from speaking appearances. The policy standards indicate that Catholic institutions should not give awards or speaking opportunities to " those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles."

Of course! What other institution thwarts their own system of beliefs? None! Liberal colleges yell' opposition' off the stage. They don't stand for differing opinions. It's good we take this stand in all cases for our own protection. There's plenty of counter-culture out there if anyone wants to hear it. We don't have to invite it into our institutions. Never let us lose sight of who and what we are.

This is the kind of attitude I expected when I converted and it is in part the reason I did so.

It's so refreshing to finally see the Bishops of the Catholic Church getting the backbone to stand up to the political catholic office holders in America. I had about given up hope that someone would defend Christ's Church. When I heard statements made by Cardinal McCarrick that he couldn't admonish his 'catholic' friends, it made my skin crawl. He is supposed to be the representative of the Apostles. Jesus admonished Peter telling him "get thee behind me, Satan.'
