Chinese bishop explains choice to join Patriotic Association

November 11, 2009

A Chinese 'underground' bishop who caused consternation among his people when he joined the government-backed Patriotic Association has told the AsiaNews service that he took the step for the sake of his flock. Bishop An Shuxin, who had spent years in prison for resisting the government before he finally agreed to join the Patriotic Association, explained that with the government's recognition he is free to minister to his people in ways that were impossible when he was under constant surveillance. The Chinese bishop said that he had not consulted with the Congregation for Evangelization before joining the group-- thus denying the rumors that he acted under pressure from some Vatican officials.
