John Allen: fight against secularism is Pope Benedict's top priority

Vatican-watcher John Allen sees the Pope's invitation to Anglicans, along with his moves toward reconciliation with traditionalists, as aspects of an overall strategy to promote what he (Allen) calls "evangelical Catholicism." The goal is to consolidate and strengthen a distinctive Catholic identity in an age of prevailing secularism. "At the policy setting level of the church today," Allen writes, "this defense of Cahtolic identity is job number one."
