First beatification of Hungarian victim of Communist persecution
November 03, 2009
Auxiliary Bishop Zoltán Meszlényi of Esztergom-- Hungary’s primatial see-- was beatified on October 31. Cardinal Péter Erdo, principal celebrant at the Mass at Esztergom’s basilica, noted that Bishop Meszlényi was the first victim of Hungarian Communist persecution to be beatified.
Born in 1892 and ordained auxiliary bishop in 1937, Bishop Meszlényi assumed the administration of the archdiocese following Cardinal József Mindszenty’s imprisonment. Dragged to a prison camp in the middle of the night, Bishop Meszlényi was tortured to death in 1951.
