Vatican, SSPX begin talks, identify key doctrinal questions

Vatican officials and representatives of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) met on October 26 for the first in a projected series of discussions about doctrinal issues that divide the traditionalist group from the Holy See. Although both sides have agreed that the talks should proceed without publicity, the Vatican issued a brief public statement that the conversations had begun in "a cordial, respectful, and constructive climate," and were expected to continue-- probably twice a month-- for some time. The talks are taking place at the offices of the Ecclesia Dei commission near St. Peter's Square.
The main doctrinal issues that were identified at the first meeting as topics for consideration, the Vatican statement indicated, were: "the concept of Tradition, the Missal of Paul VI, the interpretation of Vatican Council II in continuity with Catholic doctrinal Tradition, the themes of the unity of the Church and the Catholic principles of ecumenism, the relationship between Christianity and non-Christian religions, and religious freedom."
