Viet police step up pressure against Hue parish

October 21, 2009

Vietnamese authorities, who closed down Catholic classrooms in a violent raid in September, have now instructed police to prevent the parishioners of Loan Ly from holding religious-education sessions in an open field. Police stopped Catholics who were clearing the field to create a meeting-place, claiming that the land belonged to a local government official-- although records show the title was given to the Catholic Church. Authorities blocked cell-phone and internet access to the area last week, to stop Catholics from reporting their troubles to the outside world.
