African Synod sends solidarity message to Africa's war-torn Great Lakes region
October 21, 2009
Participants in the African Synod, which is meeting in Rome this month, interrupted their discussions on October 20 to send a message of solidarity to the suffering people of Africa's Great Lakes region. The message was addressed to the bishops of Sudan, Chad, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Central African Republic. In it, the Synod fathers deplored the persistent warfare in that African region, the resulting flight of hundreds of thousands of refugees, and the "worrisome situation of child-soldiers, orphans, those who are maimed and persons with grave physical and psychological problems." The message called for peaceful solutions to the conflicts in the region, and invoked the intercession of Africa's saints to bring an end to the bloodshed.
