Faculty at Jesuit-run law school distances itself from professor who opposed same-sex marriage

September 24, 2009

Scott Fitzgibbon, a professor at Jesuit-run Boston College Law School, has drawn criticism from his colleagues after appearing in a televised commercial for a drive to overturn same-sex marriage in Maine. The law school dean, John Garvey, made a point of saying that Fitzgibbon was expressing a personal opinion, and the school welcomed professors who hold opposite views. Later 76 members of the law-school faculty joined in a public statement emphasizing their commitment to equality, and noting especially:

We are proud of the fact that Boston College Law School was one of the first law schools in the country to include sexual orientation in its non-discrimination pledge, and we reaffirm our commitment to making our institution a welcome and safe place for all students, including LGBT students.
