CWN Editor's Note: In 1973, Mother Canopi, a patristics scholar, established the cloistered Mater Ecclesiae Abbey on Isola San Giulio (San Giulio Island), a small island in Lake Orta (photograph). The monastery grew to over 80 nuns by 1989, leading to the founding of a daughter monastery. In 1993, at Pope St. John Paul II’s invitation, Mother Canopi wrote the meditations for the Good Friday Via Crucis at the Colosseum.
