Uruguay legalizes adoption by homosexual couples
September 10, 2009
Over the objections of the nation’s bishops, Uruguay became the first Latin American nation to legalize adoptions by homosexual couples. The nation’s senate voted to approve the measure on September 9.
“From Genesis in the Bible, it says that ‘God created man and woman,’” said Bishop Pablo Jaime Galimberti di Vietri of Salto. “The position of the Church is very clear on this issue … there is no proof that adoption by homosexuals is a positive thing.”
The nation’s leading prelate-- Archbishop Nicolás Cotugno Fanizzi, SDB, of Montevideo-- added that it is a “serious error to accept the adoption of children by homosexual couples.”
“It’s not about religion, philosophy or sociology,” he added. “It’s something which is mainly about the respect of human nature itself.”
75% of the nation’s 3.3 million residents are Catholic.
