Venezuela’s Chávez claims relations with Church are good, would like to meet Pope

Visiting Italy on September 7, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez said that his relations with the Church are good and that he would be interested in meeting with Pope Benedict-- even though “some bishop” might criticize him. The Venezuelan leader, who recently led efforts to ban religious education in schools, also praised President Barack Obama as a man with “a good instinct; he is a wise man.”
