Constantinople weighs recognition of independent Ukrainian Orthodox Church

CWN Editor's Note: The Orthodox Patriarchate of Constantinople has announced that it is conferring with other Orthodox churches about the possibility of recognizing an autocephalous (self-governing) Ukrainian Orthodox Church. The proposal could end a split between rival Orthodox factions in Ukraine, but is strongly opposed by the Russian Orthodox Church, which regards Ukraine as its canonical territory.
